In November, Vogue cohosted 7th on Sale, a fabulous sample sale and gala, the proceeds from which will go to AIDS-related charities working here and abroad. The party was accompanied by an eBay auction of more than 6,000 items donated by the world's top designers. I expect that by the time the bidding finally stops (it's still going as I write), we shall have raised millions for the cause. Stefano Gabbana, a fellow cochair of the gala, told me that he was very moved by the whole experience: In Italy, he said, such collective charitable efforts were virtually nonexistent in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Tilda Swinton spoke forcefully that evening about the remoteness that many young Westerners these days feel toward the disease-as if it had somehow passed. Of course it hasn't: On the contrary, more people are being destroyed by this affliction than ever before. We must think globally, and we must act positively.
Swinton also announced the winners of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award for 2005. The top prize, of $200,000 and mentoring, went to four young men from Newport Beach, California, who design Trovata, a men's and women's label that does charming punk-preppy ...
