While three members of the Missouri National Guard's 735th Main Support Battalion--1st Lt. Nathan Wilde, Sgt. 1st Class Kenny Carder, and Sgt. 1st Class Shannon Wilde--were serving in Iraq, they became saddened by the sight of Iraqi children walking barefoot on rough ground.
"It was sad to see," Sgt. Wilde told the Jefferson City (Mo.) News Tribune. "I cannot imagine my kids without decent clothes and shoes."
Being proactive types, the three soldiers organized Operation Shoe Drop to collect shoes and distribute them to Iraqi children. The guardsmen asked friends and family back in Missouri to donate unused shoes from their closets, but what they received instead were mostly new shoes bought on sale.
