The Jets, who have the fourth pick, could be sitting in one of the power chairs if Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler continues to climb the draft boards. That could put three quarterbacks near the top of the draft: Cutler, Southern California's Matt Leinart and Texas' Vince Young. G.M. Terry Bradway says the team isn't likely to pick a quarterback because it has so much money invested in QB Chad Pennington. But it could--and should--be in the market for one by the draft. Pennington is coming off a second shoulder surgery, and new coach Eric Mangini might not be willing to roll the dice with him. ... The Bears, who have the 26th pick, took a long look at cornerbacks at the Senior Bowl with an eye toward adding depth on defense. CB Jerry Azumah is expected to leave as a free agent, so the team, at minimum, needs someone who can be the nickel back. Ohio State's Ashton Youboty and Penn State's Anwar Phillips might last until the end of the first round. Texas' Cedric Griffin (6-1, 190) is physical, but he needs to polish his coverage skills. ... USC's RB LenDale White would be awfully tempting if he's available when the Cardinals pick 10th. So would Virginia OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who is expected to go much higher, USC OT Winston Justice and Texas OT Jonathan Scott. Arizona's offensive line needs help, and getting someone who could start for the next 10 years would represent good value. ... The Packers appear to be leaning toward defense with the fifth overall pick. The top two candidates are N.C. State DE Mario Williams and Ohio State LB A.J. Hawk. Either would be an immediate starter and add a needed playmaking presence. Hawk is the more polished of the two; Williams is a Julius Peppers type who can be dominant if he plays hard. G.M. Ted Thompson will try to parlay his five picks into almost double that, which would allow him to take a running back in the second round and beyond. ... Look for the Chiefs to concentrate on wide receivers and cornerbacks in the first round. The team largely has neglected those positions early in recent drafts. It might be in position to grab the first receiver or corner with the 20th pick. Ohio State WR Santonio Holmes might be too tempting to pass up if he is available. Virginia Tech CB Jimmy Williams also would make sense.--TSN correspondents
* SENIOR BOWL DISH
The best cornerback at the Senior Bowl was Clemson's Tye Hill, who could challenge Virginia Tech's Jimmy Williams as the draft's top corner. The talk in Mobile, Ala., was that Hill is as strong, if not stronger, in press coverage technique than the Titans' Pacman Jones, the first corner selected last year. * The wide receiver class is weak, but Notre Dame WR Maurice Stovall stole the show all week. He showed great body control on several acrobatic catches and displayed some burst off the line. * Iowa's Chad Greenway was the best outside linebacker in Mobile. He has 4.5 speed and the versatility to be stout against the run, drop into coverage and be an effective blitzer. In blitz pickup drills last week, Greenway showed the ability to consistently beat the blocks of running backs. Think Patriots OLB Mike Vrabel with speed. * Ohio State C Nick Mangold is the real deal. He is very athletic, technically sound and intelligent. He also has the aggressive demeanor you want in an offensive lineman. He'll be the top center drafted, and he has the talent to start as a rookie. * Coaches raved about Maryland LB D'Qwell Jackson, calling him a coach on the field. Jackson played inside in college, but many see him as a weakside linebacker in the pros--ideally in a "Tampa 2" scheme. * Washington State RB Jerome Harrison got off to a bad start by weighing in at 195 pounds. But once he got the pads on, he turned into an animal. He showed good cutback ability and a strong burst, reminding some scouts of Jets RB Curtis Martin. Harrison is more physical than he looks and has a shot at breaking into the Day 1 mix. * Virginia Tech DE Darryl Tapp (6-1, 266) ...
