Ben Roethlisberger has played phenomenal football in the playoffs. He has thrown for 680 yards and seven touchdowns with only one interception while leading Pittsburgh to wins at Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Denver.
What kills me is that so many people think Roethlisberger has suddenly emerged in the playoffs--that until they began he'd basically been coasting along while the Steelers won games with their running attack and defense. Sorry, folks, but that's not how it works.
Admittedly, Roethlisberger's numbers won't blow you away. He ranked 21st in the league in passing yards (2,385) and tied for 14th in touchdown passes (17) in the regular season. Average stats. But it's not his job to wow the fantasy crowd.
The quarterback's job is to put his team in position to score. If that means handing off 12 times on a 15-play drive, so be it. But when he does drop back to pass, those throws had better get to the right spot at the right time. Fans will remember the 2-yard touchdown run, but the third-and-8 play in which the quarterback threaded the needle and kept the drive alive was every bit as important. Those are the plays that must occur in every game in order for a team to win.
And in that regard Roethlisberger was marvelously effective. He had a quarterback rating of 98.6, third ...
