[1] THE MAIN EVENT

Like you've something better to do

The sixth-seeded Steelers and the first-time Seahawks are not the sexiest pair of teams ever to take the field for the Super Bowl. But you'll still watch, and we can prove it.

"The numbers are stable," says Barbara Zidovsky, senior vice president of Nielsen Sports. "No matter what, the ratings come in around 40, 41, which means about 45 million households. There is no other event in television that performs like that."

Market size? Irrelevant. Predicted blowout? No matter. Country or hip-hop at halftime? Same thing. Handsome quarterback? So what?

There is only one Super Bowl each year. Face it: They could throw out a couple of teams from the Delaware Valley Independent Football League, with Strawberry Alarm Clock at halftime, and you'd watch.--Sean Deveney
