SIR: In the September issue you write: "anyone engaged in the sale of goods and services, from Woolworths to the amateur painter making occasional sales, has to have an Australian Business Number."
This is quite wrong. The only people or businesses who must have an ABN are taxi drivers, or businesses with a gross income exceeding $50,000. They must register for GST, and an Australian Business Number comes as part of the package.
Any other business can operate quite happily and legally without an ABN. It just means that if they make a sale to ...
