How to organize your makeup

We'd all love to have a vanity table in the style of Joan Crawford. But the alternative doesn't have to be dumping everything you own in a bottomless pit of a makeup bag. If stored properly, your cosmetics will perform better, and you'll never be frustrated that you can't find your favorite lipstick.
* See the light. I keep all skin-care products in the bathroom to apply after a shower. But cosmetics are best put on in front of a mirror near natural lighting-most likely the bedroom since few bathrooms have big windows. The other option is to install a vanity mirror that has vertical rows of 60-watt bulbs to help brighten up a sunless space or to use at night.
* Find a holding pattern. I'm really compulsive about keeping my cosmetics separated into categories. Lucite makeup trays with partitions work well, as do plastic silverware dividers placed inside a drawer. Try to group your makeup into day and evening looks within ...
