Located in Independence National Historical Park, the [1] Liberty Bell has to be one of the top three iconic American symbols-right up there with Old Glory and apple pie. Situated across from Independence Hall, the bell, which cracked soon after being cast in England, originally was used to summon colonists to the first reading of the Declaration of Independence. Every year, some 1.6 million people visit the 2,080-pound bell, housed in a $12.9 million pavilion and exhibit hall. Admission is free but there is usually a line. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
