HERB: Hawthorn

AKA: Crataegus oxyacantha, Crataegus laevigata, Crataegus monogyna

PART USED: Berries, flowers, leaves

WHAT IT DOES BEST: Hawthorn may help the heart function more efficiently by promoting blood flow.

THE BACKGROUND: Hawthorn is one of the oldest known medicinal plants in Europe, where it has been used for hundreds of years as a heart tonic.

RECENT FINDINGS:

* Numerous clinical trials show hawthorn extract improves heart function and symptoms for people in the early stages of congestive heart failure (CHF). According to a research review published in the June 2003 issue of The American Journal of Medicine, hawthorn extract significantly improved dyspnea (difficult breathing) and fatigue in CHF sufferers. Two separate studies using an extract of fresh hawthorn berries improved exercise tolerance, dyspnea and fatigue in people with CHF. These findings were published in the October 2001 issue of the German medical journal Arzneimittelforschung and a 2003 issue of Phytomedicine.
