A VICIOUS winter virus nicknamed the "black-eyed bug" is rampaging through Britain.

Thousands of victims were off work and school yesterday after being struck down by the illness that causes black rings round the eyes and ashen faces.

The South and Midlands have been worst hit but experts warned the bug was heading for northern parts of the UK too. Some GPs' surgeries say they are "under siege" from the number of patients affected.

Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey has been forced to close 80 of its 700 beds to admissions and has asked visitors to stay away because of an outbreak.
