SAN DIEGO -- The various sets of formal guidelines that physicians use to diagnose post-polio syndrome are inconsistent and misleading, resulting in both false-positive and false-negative diagnoses, concluded researchers from the Post-Polio Syndrome Program at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Olavo M. Vasconcelos Jr., M.D., and associates acknowledged the challenge of diagnosing a condition such as post-polio syndrome (PPS) in the absence of specific clinical markers or laboratory assays.
