Section: Government & Politics - Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has embarked on a two-day official visit to Japan today (August 30, 2005), aimed at forging an economic cooperation agreement between the two countries.
Speaking before departure, Mr. Thaksin said the main objective of the trip was to conclude a bilateral accord, describing it as more important in terms of content than the establishment of a free trade agreement (FTA).
"FTA covers only the liberalisation of trade, reduced taxation, and import clearance matters. But the economic cooperation agreement entails many issues such as Japanese cooperation and support for the international promotion of Thai cuisine, as well as a project to build an industrial city in Asia. The two countries will also seal an accord on a hygiene examination system, which will help the export of Thai farm products to the Japanese market," he said.
The prime minister said Japan and Thailand had also agreed many mutual cooperation programs, including one which would allow young Thais to study agriculture in Japan.
