The brilliant images on a big-screen plasma TV are eye-catching, especially in high definition (HD). With screens growing and prices shrinking even for the largest sizes, these sleek flat panels look more attractive than ever.

Just six months ago, $4,000 would buy you a good 42-inch plasma HDTV Today it buys a 50-inch set. Some fine 42-inch HDTVs were priced below $3,000 at press time, and with more cuts expected, they may well cost less by year's end.

Enhanced-definition (ED) models, which display less detail than an HDTV, have also dropped in price. Some very good 42-inch ED sets sell for about $2,000.
