Cell phones that take pictures and play MP3s generally perform those tasks less capably than stand-alone cameras and music players. But the S500 Sony Ericsson W800 Walkman Phone adeptly combines a cell phone, 2-megapixel camera, FM radio, and MP3 player.
Available from Sony (www.sonystyle.com) and Sony Ericsson (www.shopwireless.sonyericsson.com), the W800 works with service from T-Mobile (customers can expect full coverage) and Cingular (customers will not be able to access the entire Cingular network).
In our first tests of the W800, its phone, camera, and MP3 player all worked well and were integrated nicely: If a call comes in while you're listening to music, the music stops and the phone kicks in; the music resumes when you hang up. Slide back the cameralens cover and the phone's display automatically becomes an LCD viewfinder. Controls and buttons let you switch functions without clicking through menus.
