The excitement caused by seeing dolphins at sea is one of the true joys of Nature. They are playful, trusting and intelligent, and we are failing lamentably to protect them.

You do not need any more than common sense to confirm the link between pair-trawling in the area and the presence of mutilated dolphins on our beaches. It raises the bigger question of the whole appalling business of commercial fishing, which thrives on exploitation of diminishing resources.

Recent publicity about the need to license the trade in caviar from sturgeon in the Caspian is a step in the right direction, and one that begs that this route …
