SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A just-approved oral drug that targets the molecular mechanisms of cancer extends the lives of some gastric-cancer patients whose disease has progressed due to failures of other treatments.
Sunitinib (Sutent, Pfizer, also known as SU11248) appears to control the spread of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, or GISTs, after another drug -- imatinib (Gleevec) loses effectiveness.
The Food and Drug Administration approved the therapy Thursday for that use as well as for advanced kidney cancer.
