SIR: In the October 2005 issue Alan Barcan states that I had quoted the false Petronius in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, but that no date was available. Alas, I was not the true source of the Petronius quotation whose date was quite recent, September 2, 2003, and so does not predate the earliest citation in Australia found by Barcan, May 1985.

The article described the revolt by many New South Wales local councils against the Carr government's attempt to force amalgamations. Evans Shire was mounting a defence against a forced marriage with Bathurst City Council--our sin being that we were doughnut-shaped. (Perhaps this was why the Herald reporters, Daniel Lewis and Claire O'Rourke, titled their article "Bunfight in the Bush".) Our General Manager, Mr Graeme Taylor, inserted the Petronius quote as a frontispiece to our submission to the Boundaries Commission.

Daniel Lewis interviewed Graeme and me (as a councillor), and was given a copy of our submission, and when the article appeared it attributed the quote to me. Thankfully, Graeme Taylor is not a vindictive man and he bears me no grudge for my undeserved and fleeting fame.

Alan Barcan's search for the truth reminds me ...
