Lottery cash could help save clan chief's castle.

The clan chief of an ancient Highland family could see his castle saved, thanks to GBP25million of National Lottery funding, it has emerged.

John MacLeod of MacLeod, the 29th chief, owns Dunvegan Castle and the Black Cuillin mountain range on Skye, a famous climbing excursion.

The site has been owned by Mr MacLeod's family for more than 800 years, although the castle is the result of a restoration by the 25th chief between 1840 and 1850.

Under the new deal the now-dilapidated home could be repaired in return for giving the mountains up for community ownership.
