Jan. 24--Detroit's hard-pressed auto industry is reeling in an icon of the 1990s' automotive excess.
Dogged by dismal sales of the Explorer SUV, Ford said Monday it will close its main Explorer plant in St. Louis. It's part of a wider plan by Ford to idle 30,000 workers, shut 14 plants and wipe out 26 percent of the automaker's assembly capacity in North America.
While Explorer production will continue in limited volumes at Louisville, Ky., the decision to close the sport utility vehicle's home plant is regarded as a clear signal that popularity for the hefty SUV, Detroit's lifeblood for the last two decades, is waning.
