A Thousand Miles from Any Ocean.(Poem)

 
A THOUSAND MILES FROM ANY OCEAN 
 
   We lie awake to the sound of waves: 
   a subliminal tape, The Joy of Loving. 
   We don't know the text submerged 
   in the rasp of sea against beach. 
   You may hear an occasional word, 
   says the introduction, and sometimes 
   I fish for sense below the surface. 
   I hear only hiss and cellophane crackle, 
   foghorns, the creak of gulls, and once 
   an especially strong wave crashes 
   like the pop and fizz of champagne 
   being uncorked. Your subconscious 
   will absorb the suggestions offered,
