A chance for a renewal
It's encouraging to hear that 300 of the Wakeland Elementary School's 400 students will return next year to become part of the Manatee County school district's first International Baccalaureate program for elementary students.
Last year, district officials announced plans to turn Wakeland into a magnet school and eliminate attendance zones so that parents could send their children elsewhere. The move provoked suspicion that it was an effort to raise the school's ranking simply by driving out students who are struggling.
