For the third year in a row, the majority of U.S. citizens earning PhDs are women, according to a recent study by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.
The study, which looked at 42,155 new doctoral recipients in 2004, found that the number of earned doctorates at American universities rose 3.4% in 2004. That's the largest increase since 1992.
The median time to earn a doctorate is eight years. Those in physical sciences average 6.7 years to complete, while degrees in education are averaging 12.7 years. Women received two-thirds of the doctorates in education, while men receive more than three-quarters of those in engineering.
