The foundation of this now desperate quarterback situation at Texas is based on a series of untruths. Or, to be politically correct, changes of heart.
Vince Young promised for the months that he'd return for his senior season at Texas. It took him all of four days to change his mind after an electrifying performance in the Rose Bowl. His decision leaves the national champion Longhorns in a precarious situation.
Frankly, Texas has nothing at quarterback behind Young. Really, less than nothing. The offense is loaded for next fall and the defense returns key starters, but the only scholarship quarterback returning is freshman Colt McCoy, who has done little during his redshirt season to convince the staff he will be ready to play next fall.
So how did Texas coach Mack Brown, the nation's best recruiter, get stuck with one quarterback and no experience? Another-ahem--change of heart. Ryan Perrilloux, the nation's No. 1 quarterback recruit last year, had committed to the Longhorns in the summer of 2004. But on national signing day, Perrilloux chose LSU.
Brown had backed off other quarterback targets because he thought he had landed Perrilloux. Although Brown won't publicly say so, he was steamed by Perrilloux's late switch--not because Perrilloux changed his mind but because he left Texas vulnerable in the event Young left after his junior season.
But wait, this story of changes of heart gets better--and might get more complex as national signing day approaches in February. Though McCoy likely will open spring practice as Texas' quarterback, he will be pushed by freshman Jevan Snead, who committed to Florida in May but reneged and committed to Texas in November.
Now that Young has made his intentions clear--thus giving the Texas staff a month to re-recruit the position--there could be other changes of heart. The possibility of starting for the defending national champions and throwing to talented receivers Limas ...
