Matt Leinart doesn't look good. Please forgive college football's golden boy. He's fresh from 60 minutes of Texas torture. And he's toast.
Leinart is barefoot and walking in silence down a lonely hallway. He isn't dazed and confused. He knows where he is: the Rose Bowl. And he knows what has happened: Texas beat his Southern California Trojans to become the national champion. That's why Leinart marches reluctantly toward the Texas locker room. He follows the cacophony of celebration and finally finds it.
"Coach Brown! Coach Brown!" Leinart shouts. Texas' Mack Brown turns and eyes Leinart. A smile creases his face.
"We couldn't stop you guys," Brown whispers into Leinart's ear as the two embrace after the 41-38 shootout. "That was a classic game."
Leinart isn't going to argue. He doesn't have the strength. He is beaten. So is Reggie Bush, who appears from the darkness in Leinart's wake. He offers a defeated hand to Brown.
"If you're ever in Austin, you look us up," says Brown.
Oh, Brown will be easy to find. He'll be the guy clutching the crystal football. On this night in Pasadena, he holds it high.
