Drummer Ray Marchica makes his debut as a leader on this varied and exciting program of standards and originals. Leading a quartet that includes guitarist Rodney Jones, bassist Lonnie Plaxico and tenor saxophonist Teodross Avery, Marchica covers the stylistic ground quite thoroughly, starting with a rhythmically complex adaptation of the bebop classic "Billie's Bounce" and then proceeding (by way of a wholly unnecessary but happily brief drum solo) into a fun and deeply funky arrangement of the kitsch standard "Tequila"; by the end of the program he's made his way back to swing standard territory with a sweetly languid rendition of "I Can't Get ...
