Two of the most celebrated violinists in jazz history are featured on this pair of reissued CDs. The Svend Asmussen disc consists of live performances recorded between March and September of 1996 in various Scandinavian clubs; it was originally issued in 1999 on the Da Capo label (DCCD 9429). The Stuff Smith disc is a reissue of an LP originally released in 1965 (EmArcy 26008), which documents a live date at Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. (This reissue includes three additional tracks recorded at an earlier performance in the same venue.) Although the repertoire of both players leans toward jazz standards, they could hardly be more different in their stylistic approaches: Asmussen favors a light, elegant tone with moderate vibrato and lots of elegant flourishes; his overall sound owes quite a bit to Stephane Grappelli.
