One might be hard-pressed to find many obvious parallels between the traditional music of Ireland and the classical music of India, but in one respect they are very much alike: in their willingness to absorb instruments from foreign cultures and adapt their playing techniques (and even the instruments' physical design) to the needs of local musical style. As the Irish did the banjo, the bouzouki and the flute, so have Indian musicians of both the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions adopted the slide guitar and made it their own. This should probably come as no surprise, given that the slide guitar's combination of enhanced sustain and microtonal flexibility makes it a perfect fit for Indian styles of melodic variation and ornamentation, but it can nevertheless be a little bit ...
