Some New Year's resolutions for the fantasy football owner:
Don't draft a QB early, Making an uncharacteristic move for me, I took Daunte Culpepper with my second-round pick in one league. Considering I ended the season with Jamie Martin and Kyle Boller as my top two QBs, it's a mistake I won't make again.
Don't draft WRs who play with shaky QBs. Joey Harrington and Jeff Garcia, thanks for wasting the first-round talent the Lions have at wideout. Brandon Lloyd, you've got a lot of skill, but your rookie quarterback couldn't connect with you in the end zone. Muhsin Muhammad and Derrick Mason, it was about time Kyle Orton and Anthony Wright got the boot.
Don't overrate tight ends. Other than Antonio Gates, they're far too inconsistent, even guys such as Tony Gonzalez, Jeremy Shockey, Alge Crumpler and Jason Witten. Landing a good third running back or a team's undisputed No. 1 wide receiver is much smarter.
Don't follow runs on kickers or defenses. Just draft something--one of each in the final two rounds--and then keep an eye on the waiver wire for better alternatives early in the season.
Don't pay attention to what others think. It doesn't matter where someone else has a player ranked or whether your pick goes against conventional thinking. Even if Jamal Lewis is perceived as a sure-fire first-rounder, the point is to look smart at the end of the season, not on draft day.
