PLAYOFF READINESS
****
CHICAGO BEARS
PLAYOFF PROGNOSIS: The Bears feel good about their situation--regardless of their opponent in the second round--because they have allowed only five touchdowns at home all season. The front four helped the secondary in the second half of the season by stepping up the pass rush. The defense will benefit from the return of SS Mike Brown (calf). On offense, QB Rex Grossman has to harness his gunslinger attitude and not force throws because RB Thomas Jones remains the focal point. Rookie K Robbie Gould remains a concern. He has struggled from beyond 40 yards. FINAL GRADES: Offense: C+. Jones has carried the unit, but Grossman is providing the potential for more balance. Defense: A. A healthy Brian Urlacher made all the difference. Special teams: C+. The coverage units were solid, but the punt returns were a white-knuckle experience. Coaching: A. Lovie Smith made all the right moves at quarterback.--Brad Biggs
DETROIT LIONS
OFFSEASON GAME PLAN: The Lions will look for a veteran to compete with QB Joey Harrington, or they might try to trade for a younger player with experience. LT Jeff Backus and pass-rush specialist Kalimba Edwards are the notable free agents who might leave; losing Backus would create a big hole in the line. The offensive skill positions are set, but an infusion of young linemen with size and toughness and a blocking tight end are needed. Other than CB Dre' Bly, the defense lacks playmakers. The linebackers are solid--if they can stay healthy. FINAL GRADES: Offense: D-. The running strategy was weak, and the passing game was a mix of dinks and dunks. Defense: B. It wasn't dominant, but it played well enough to be a playoff contender, especially early in the season. Special teams: B-. The kicking game was excellent, but the return units took a big step back. Coaching: D-. Too many young players never developed, and the offensive scheme didn't make much sense.--Tom Kowalski
