A lot of people look at the Giants and talk about Michael Strahan, but Antonio Pierce was the backbone of that defense and an emotional leader for the entire team. I think they'll have a difficult time in the playoffs if he can't play. ... T.J. Houshmandzadeh has been an emerging player for the past two years for Cincinnati. He's a big guy who knows how to get open. He's not overly fast, but his playing speed is good enough and he's come up with clutch plays. ... Lovie Smith would be my pick for coach of the year just because of what the Bears have done: getting into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed without their starting quarterback and without a whole lot of offense most of the season. What Lovie gets commended for more than anything is being able to manage the game without some of his star players. ... I think Chad Pennington will be back with the Jets next season. I don't know how effective he'll be or to what level he can take it compared to what the original expectations were for him.
