PLAYOFF READINESS

DENVER BRONCOS
PLAYOFF PROGNOSIS: Denver finally should have its entire roster healthy. The return of Darrent Williams (groin) gives the team its strongest trio of cornerbacks since its Super Bowl years. But pressuring the quarterback might be a problem; the team had just 28 sacks this season. Coordinator Larry Coyer picks his spots to blitz, but he might need to find ways to create more pressure against the AFC's top passers. The Broncos believe they can run against anybody; opponents figure to stack the line and force QB Jake Plummer to beat them. Denver will keep running even if yardage is hard to come by. FINAL GRADES: Offense: A-. An efficient Plummer complemented the run game. Defense: B+. The rookie corners were excellent; the takeaways were a godsend. Special teams: B. A consistent return game would be nice. Coaching: A. This could be Mike Shanahan's best coaching job in Denver.--Lee Rasizer
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
OFFSEASON GAME PLAN: Much will depend on the direction Dick Vermeil's successor wants to take the team, but the lineup might not change much. There are two regulars scheduled to be free agents, but both players--FB Tony Richardson and DT Lional Dalton--can be replaced. All the defensive starters except Dalton and LB Kendrell Bell likely will return. Bell was an underachiever and could be replaced by former starter Shawn Barber. The club is aging on offense; RG Will Shields, a key lineman, might retire. The team needs to find a premier receiver--it will took for a free agent--and also must address the Larry Johnson-Priest Holmes situation. The Chiefs are far more effective using one feature back. FINAL GRADES: Offense: B+. The unit overcame a slow start. Defense: D+. It was improved but still inconsistent. Special teams: C-. KR/PR Dante Hall wasn't much of a factor; the coverage units struggled. Coaching: C+. The team never put the defensive pieces together.--Adam Teicher
