1 HUT, HUT, HIKE--SMASH!
The year of the linebacker in the NFL
So, you like hits that separate running backs from their teeth? You enjoy seeing a big tight end run into a brick wall of a defender? You like watching huge freaks who couldn't play faster if they rode crotch rockets?
Well, you're going to love 2006.
Of course, it all starts with the Bears' Brian Urlacher and the Ravens' Ray Lewis. But in 2005, the rookie class of linebackers was one of the best in NFL history. Taking the next step will be Lofa Tatupu of the Seahawks, Shawne Merriman of the Chargers, Odell Thurman of the Bengals, Derrick Johnson of the Chiefs, DeMarcus Ware of the Cowboys and Channing Crowder of the Dolphins.
And that group might be eclipsed by the linebacker class of 2006, which includes at least three first-round prospects: Ohio State's A.J. Hawk, Iowa's Chad Greenway and Alabama's DeMeco Ryans.--Dan Pompei
