WHEN I WAS a baby in arms, no doubt I wore a bonnet, or one of those knitted infant caps, but I don't remember; early photograph albums are unhelpful on the point. The first headgear of positive recollection was my school cap, which went on at age five, and came off ten years later.
As protection from the elements or from assault, the cap was next to useless. But then, utility usually comes low on the list of requirements we impose on our headgear; hats, to a large extent, are all about something else.
At the time of this writing, almost anybody's mind could be provoked to climbing just that extra inch or so, up to the level of what might be sitting on ...
