THE 1950s AND 1960s may have been one of the great periods of American cinema but it was a time when film art was in the greatest danger. Archiving and preservation were rudimentary, film studios, distributors, censors and television stations hacked prints to fit time slots, to remove so-called suggestive scenes, and sometimes to get back at a difficult director. All of the above happened to the great Sam Peckinpah.
