Senate President Tom Lee, R-Brandon, burnished his image as a political maverick last month when the Legislature bowed to his pressure and banned lawmakers from accepting as much as a Hershey's Kiss from lobbyists.

It was a shock to a culture where free wining and dining is an expected perk for legislators.

The gift ban law was just part of Lee's quest for less special interest influence in Tallahassee. Lee has also forced lawmakers to maintain Web sites detailing the financial dealings of their political committees.

But even for Lee, there can be too much public disclosure of political inner workings.
