HERB: green tea

AKA: Camellia sinensis

PART USED: leaves

WHAT IT DOES BEST: Green tea is known for the benefits of its main active ingredient, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a potent antioxidant. An increasing number of published scientific studies suggest that EGCG aids weight control and protects against heart disease and cancer.

THE BACKGROUND: Green tea has been used for thousands of years in China to alleviate headaches and body aches, increase energy, levels, promote disease resistance and enhance digestion and detoxification.

RECENT FINDINGS: The antioxidant effects of green tea appear to have a wide range of health benefits. Preliminary studies suggest that green tea may help prevent coronary artery disease, liver disease, diabetes, certain cancers, Alzheimer's disease and even tooth decay.

weight loss: Besides several test tube and animal studies, two human trials have found that EGCG has antiobesity effects. It appears to reduce body fat and waist circumference. The studies were reported in the January 2005 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the January 2002 Phytomedicine.
