NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Aetna Inc. said Wednesday it promoted President Ronald Williams to chief executive, effective Feb. 14.

CEO John Rowe, 61 years old, plans to retire by the end of 2006. He took the reigns as CEO in 2000 and earned the additional title of chairman in 2001.

Rowe said he initiated discussions with the board "some time ago" about his desire to retire upon the expiration of his contract.

Williams, 56, was named president in 2002, and joined the board of directors later that year.
