PRAGUE, Jan 1 (CTK) - The elections to the Chamber of Deputies, scheduled for June, are undoubtedly the most highlighted political event of the starting year 2006.

The elections will fill in the 200 seats in the lower house and will predetermine the composition of the new government that will replace the current coalition of the Social Democrats (CSSD), Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Freedom Union-DEU (US-DEU).

In the autumn people will elect their municipal assemblies and one third of the Senate or 27 senators.

The senior opposition Civic Democrats (ODS) have for a long time been the favourite of the elections, but the runner-up CSSD has succeeded in closing the double digit gap in voter preferences to a mere 5 percent since Jiri Paroubek became PM in late April.

He replaced Stanislav Gross who resigned over his family's murky financial dealings.

The ODS would like to emerge from opposition after eight years while the CSSD hopes to win the elections and form the government for the third time in a row.
