BRATISLAVA, Jan 1 (CTK) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic criticised Mikulas Dzurinda's government for the serious impact of of its austerity-based reforms on citizens' standards of living, in his New Year's speech today.
Gasparovic also criticised politicians for pursuing their own interests and said that Slovakia "lives in tension" arising from various social disputes.
He praised the government's foreign policy.
"People find it difficult to cope with the undesirable consequences of the economic and other reforms," Gasparovic said on Slovak Television.
He said that the reform changes in the health care and pension systems have complicated the situation mainly of pensioners, the ill and disabled.
Gasparovic said that the reforms, that tightened conditions for title to social benefits, introduced fees in doctors' surgeries and compulsory individual pension schemes, were necessary.
