President Lech Kaczynski spoke of a just and caring Poland in his New Year's Eve address to Poland's citizens. The death of Pope John Paul II was in his opinion the most important event in 2005. Kaczynski emphasised that common solidarity must remain the main principle of the European community. He also wished to strengthen Poland's relations with Ukraine and expressed hope there will come a time for significant changes in relations with the Russian Federation.
