Combi USA is recalling 6,009 of its Avatar model 8100 series convertible child safety seats for a potentially serious safety flaw CONSUMER REPORTS warned about last May. The recall involves Combi sending Avatar owners a new LATCH strap. When we crash-tested the Avatar in the rearfacing position, the seat flew off the test rig, its LATCH strap severed. Under actual conditions, the defect might keep the Avatar from providing adequate protection in a crash. As a result, we judged the Avatar Not Acceptable. During our original crash tests, the problem occurred only when the Avatar was facing rearward with a dummy whose weight was at the seat's upper limit and when the seat was secured with the LATCH belt. LATCH is the universal connection system for child car seats and passenger vehicles in which connectors on the seat attach to anchors in the car.
