THE FOUNDING of the Journal of Religious History in 1959 was a Sydney event. The originating editors were three still youngish men from the History Department of the University of Sydney: Bruce Mansfield, Edwin Judge and Ken Cable (to be joined shortly by S.M. Ingham from the newly established department at the University of New South Wales). The small association set to manage the journal's affairs was, ecclesiastically, highly ecumenical but geographically confined--to Sydney, since a venture with unknown academic and problematical financial prospects might require a rapid assembling of its controllers.
