MYSTERIOUS and secretive have been the Australian media's qualifiers of choice for Opus Dei since the Catholic lay order's hand was purportedly detected manipulating a leadership change in the New South Wales Liberal Party in September. In fact, the alleged master choreographer and Opus Dei operative turned out not to be the choreographer and only married to an Opus Dei member. I think it likely that it was the suspect's Opus Dei connection which prompted I the finger pointing. That nobody seems to have ventured beyond mysterious and secretive in inferring sinister forces at work is possibly due to fear of being unmasked as a reader of The Da Vinci Code.
