While attending the Certification Open Session during the 2005 M/NA National Conference, I was particularly struck by comments made by Phyllis Pieffer, NCTM, who was MTNA president at the time. She said:
"We have to provide the incentives that will make teachers want to seek out certification, and parents seek out Certified Teachers. We especially need to publicize our status as certified teachers in our communities. We need the help of every certified teacher in the country to do this. The MTNA Certification Program has limited funds since it is a totally separate MTNA
Corporation, due to its tax status. It has to operate independently of MTNA, Inc. It will take all of us working together to develop the image of the music teacher as a well educated certified professional member of society who deserves an adequate income and standard of living.
"We are in one of the greatest professions. As part of this professional career, we need everyone who is qualified and capable of doing so to work to become a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, through the MTNA Professional Certification Program."
As a National Certification Commissioner, I am working every day to encourage my colleagues to become certified. We are in one of the greatest professions and there are a lot of us in this profession. The way to ensure the public realizes we are among the best music teachers is to become certified and to use the "NCTM" designation on every written and electronic communication. We also need to educate the public about the importance of certification and finding an NCTM to teach them or their children. Once the public begins to expect certified music teachers, it will become increasingly important for those who are not NCTMs to become certified. Professional certification will aid our efforts to be certain music teaching remains one of the greatest professions.
