THE DESTRUCTION of the New South Wales Liberal leader, John Brogden, has been an instructive demonstration of the harmful influence of journalism in modern politics. It has to be said from the very beginning that of course Brogden himself is not blameless in all this. There is no doubt that on the fateful night when he made a silly and hurtful remark about the wife of the recently retired premier and then, it is alleged, propositioned more or less seriously a couple of female journalists, he had had too much to drink and made a fool of himself. But far too much was made of this, and the motives for its sudden prominence in the media are really what are worthy of analysis.
