The University of California's shining female star abruptly quit as provost last month, days after the system starting investigating possible favoritism in the hiring of her son and the promotion of a friend with whom she had owned rental property.
Provost M.R.C. Greenwood, the system's second-in-command, resigned after The San Francisco Chronicle asked UC officials about her role in the hiring of biology professor Dr. Linda Goff as director of UC's new science and math initiative.
The announcement shocked many as Greenwood has been highly regarded during her 16-year career at UC. She is a nationally recognized leader in science and higher education policy, and is credited with the revitalization of UC Santa Cruz. She once headed the department of biology at Vassar College NY, served as a director for science in President Bill Clinton's Office of Science Technology Policy and held several jobs at UC Davis before moving to Santa Cruz.
