Embattled Charles Kennedy was thrown a lifeline by his deputy, Sir Menzies Campbell, last night amid fears the veteran MP was poised to mount a leadership challenge.

Sir Menzies broke his silence on the crisis that has engulfed the Liberal Democrat leader and said: "I do not have any intention of standing against Charles Kennedy." While Mr Kennedy pleaded for "a period of relaxation and reflection" over the Christmas holidays, Sir Menzies said there had been similar assurances from senior left-winger Simon Hughes and home affairs spokesman Mark Oaten - both, like himself, possible contenders in any succession battle. …
