Dec. 16--Chocolate isn't just candy at Patchi. It's art.
The store, at Dadeland Mall in Kendall, features its Lebanese-made chocolates nestled inside glassware -- plates, bowls, and gigantic martini glasses. The chocolate itself, which sells for $38 a pound, is hidden beneath wrappings of ribbons, beadwork or this season, holiday decorations.
"I was just enamoured," said glass artist Domenico Cavallaro, who was on his third visit to the store since it opened a few months ago. "For me, it's just refined. I always come here for a little treat."
Cavallaro said this is the first chocolate he's come across in the United States that equals what he finds in his native Italy.
Like coffee before it, chocolate is going complex and upscale.
Christmas is the peak time for premium chocolate sales, and big candy companies and small chocolatiers alike are rolling out some of their most high-end products...
