MTN's US$128 million (P716.8 million) bid for 44 percent of Mascom Wireless Botswana--40 percent owned by Econet Wireless--is not finalized, and the sale is subject to arbitration, a key Mascom shareholder has said.
DECI Investments, which claims 60 percent of Mascom, said that its two main shareholders--Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BPOPF) and Botswana Insurance Fund Management (Bifm)--had fallen out because BPOPF believes it had first refusal for Bifm shares in DECI under a shareholder agreement, Reuters reported.
DECI said that until the matter was settled, no deal with another investor could be agreed upon and no shares could be transferred. BPOPF was in talks to sell its stake in DECI, it said. As MTN shares rose on news of its latest acquisition, South African analysts debated whether MTN was paying too much for Botswana's largest mobile-phone operator.
