The Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) will reduce the costs of Internet connectivity in Africa by over 50 percent once it is completed in 2007.
According to developers of the initiative, the EASSy will enhance Africa's access to the Internet by providing high-speed connections through fiber-optic cables.
The initiative aims to enhance the optical fiber link between southern Africa and Djibouti. At its completion, a 9,300km broadband cable will connect the whole African continent. This will put an end to the use of satellite connections normally routed through Europe.
